Organic ground turmeric: flavouring and natural colouring

Organic ground turmeric is without doubt one of the most versatile spices in the world. You use it as a flavouring, but also as a natural colouring. The turmeric you order from us is organically grown and comes from India. In Dutch the spice is also known as koenjit, geelwortel and, in the past, tarmeriek. You order this ground spice with its warm yellow colour in a 500-gram shaker tub.

Which dishes suit organic ground turmeric?

Turmeric has a mildly bitter, earthy flavour and is related to ginger. It is the rhizome of Curcuma longa. Although turmeric is often used mainly as a colouring in soups, rice and cooked vegetables, you can do much more with it. The flavour goes very well with sweet potato, carrot and pumpkin: the sweetness of these vegetables combines with the slight bitterness of turmeric to create a balanced whole. Other spices that go well with turmeric are coriander, cinnamon, cumin, fennel and ginger. In North Africa, turmeric is widely used with lamb and vegetable dishes. Tip: briefly fry ground turmeric in a little oil to bring out its flavour best.

Organic ground turmeric and curcumin

The bright yellow colour of turmeric comes from curcumin, a substance naturally present in the root. Curcumin is also permitted in foods as the colouring E100. In India, turmeric has been used for centuries, both in the kitchen and in the Ayurvedic tradition. Think of the well-known golden milk: warm milk with turmeric, ginger, cinnamon and a pinch of black pepper. Black pepper and turmeric are therefore often used together in Indian cuisine.
