Cleaning the Aqualine water filter

You're likely buying a water filter because you want clean, healthy drinking water. That's a great start, of course, but did you know that the effectiveness of your Aqualine water filter also depends on how well you keep it clean? Regular cleaning ensures the system does what it promises: removing unwanted substances from your water and retaining essential minerals. This blog post explains exactly how to clean your Aqualine water filter , why it's important, and when it's better to replace it than clean it.

How much water do you drink in a day?

On average, as an adult, you drink about one and a half to two liters of water per day. But if you exercise a lot, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding, that likely increases. And if you also want to use filtered water for cooking, coffee, and tea, you'll use even more. Just calculate: how many liters of water does your household use per day? And how much of that do you want to get from a water filter?

For one to two people who primarily drink filtered water, a compact filter like the Aqualine 5 is more than sufficient. Do you drink a lot or also want to be able to cook with filtered water without constantly refilling it? Then a larger-capacity model, such as the Aqualine 12 or Aqualine 18 , is probably more suitable.

Why cleaning your water filter is important

Water flows through your filter every day. This water leaves small residues in the ceramic shell, the reservoir, and sometimes even on the mineral stones. This isn't a big deal, but if it sits for too long, your filter will become saturated or clogged. This means slower flow, reduced filtration, and even a risk of bacterial growth. Regular maintenance isn't a bonus, but simply part of the system.

How do you clean an Aqualine water filter?

Carefully disassemble the components. Start with the ceramic filter. It can turn brown due to limescale or green due to algae. Rinse the filter under cold running water and gently scrub it with a sponge. Important: it's best not to use any cleaning products. The scrubbing will make the filter white and permeable again. Let the filter dry thoroughly before replacing it.

For the upper and lower tanks, use lukewarm water with a dash of natural vinegar. That's it. This will remove limescale and any biofilm from the walls. Use a soft cloth or brush, then rinse thoroughly with clean water. If you have a glass model, avoid abrasive cleaners to prevent scratches.

Rinse the Elvan mineral stones under cold water. If they have been sitting in stagnant water for a while, you can boil them in water with a teaspoon of salt. Let them air dry thoroughly before replacing them.

How often should you clean your Aqualine water filter?

If you use your filter daily, cleaning the tank monthly is a good starting point. For heavy use (for example, in a larger household or office), it's best to do this every two weeks. The ceramic filter itself usually lasts about six to twelve months, depending on the water quality in your area and how often you clean it. If you notice a decrease in flow, even after cleaning, it's probably time to replace the filter.

The Elvan mineral stones last two to three years, provided you rinse or boil them occasionally.

Do you have an alkaline Aqualine model? Then your filter system has a pH ring. This raises the pH of your water and should be replaced annually. You can rinse the ring under cold water between uses, especially if it starts to become dull.

Aqualine Neos users benefit from an added bonus: the filter contains an IER resin (ion exchanger) that must be regenerated monthly with a saline solution. This maintains stable performance and prevents saturation of unwanted substances.

Cleaning might sound like work, but it's also a way to consciously manage your water. You care for your filter like you care for your body: regularly, mindfully, and with the understanding that purity comes from maintenance. The best part is: it doesn't take much time, but you'll definitely taste the difference.

When is it time for replacement?

Sometimes cleaning isn't enough. Filters that are no longer functioning properly let in substances you'd rather keep out. Fortunately, you don't have to invest in a whole new system. A complete annual set of filters and new mineral stones are available for every Aqualine model.
